How To Choose The Right Hall, Stairs and Landing Carpet July 2012

When it comes to choosing the right hall, stairs and landing carpets for your home, you need to ensure that the carpet you choose is attractive, but also durable. If you’re in the process of picking your new carpet then take a look at this guide to hall, stairs and landing carpets so you can decide which flooring is right for your home.

Natural carpets

Presently many people are choosing natural fibres for their hall, stairs and landing carpets, meaning natural materials are far more readily available. If you don’t know your jute from your seagrass then read on to discover more about different natural carpets.

Coir

It couldn’t get more exotic than coir, because this tough and durable carpeting is made from coconut husks. Coir looks fantastic, but the main reason why it’s such a popular choice for hall, stairs and landing carpets is that it’s incredibly resistant to daily household traffic and will last considerably longer than many other materials.

Jute

The beautiful genus cochorus plant is responsible for the production of jute, which is nown for it’s incredibly soft feel. However, jute can be less durable than other forms of carpeting so isn’t ideal for halls, carpets or stairs in very busy homes.

Seagrass

Seagrass carpeting hails from china and is made from a kind of grass which grows in paddy fields. Seagrass can look incredibly stylish but bear in mind that it’s more difficult to clean than other forms of carpet so if you have kids or pets then it’s probably best avoided in areas where spills could happen.

Sisal

The plant which produces fibres that can be sewn into sisal is called the agave sisalana. Sisal is famously tough and is fast regaining the popularity it had in the 1960’s and 1970’s as many homeowners are returning to a more timeless style of décor. Sisal can be adversely affected by too much moisture so is not generally used in high moisture areas like porches or bathrooms.

Wool

Wool carpet is relatively easy to manufacture which helps keep its costs down. This tough material also offers a great deal of choice as to the colours and designs you choose for your carpet. Wool carpet is flame, water and stain resistant and is extremely easy to maintain.
